The Battle for the souls of black folk

THOMAS AIELLO

From the preface:  “This is the story of a 20 year war of words…”

While many people report that their families are divided by their opinion on Donald Trump, my own family is divided by this debate.  My mother’s family were FIRM and PASSIONATE supporters of Dubois.  They read aloud The Souls of Black Folks on Saturday evenings and the Bible on Sunday.  Her parents sent all 5 of their children to college.  My father’s family supported Booker T Washington; both of his parents were born on a plantation and moved away when they got married. They read all 5 of Washington’s book to their kids. All 14 of their now grown-up kids or the grand kids like me still own the acreage their parents farmed and lived on for their entire lives.  Family reunions are just weird is all I can say.  There is a book to be written if I can ever figure out which side of my family won’t kill me first.

The pedagogy of Empowerment

Community Schools as a Social Movement in Egypt

Malak Zaalouk

Purchase Book Here

This new study offers a historical understanding of the initiative whilst carefully embedding it in the political and economic global context of the late twentieth century. The author first introduces the movement approach to development and carefully develops the notion of learning as a countermovement to the disintegrating world of today. She then moves on to describe how a community schools movement developed in the most deprived areas of rural Egypt and how such a movement is planned, mobilized, and sustained and details the strategies and activities of the initiative. In the third part of the work the author describes the results of the movement and its impact on people’s lives. The last chapter places the community education movement within the political economy of Egypt’s educational reform and attempts to forecast the movement’s long-term impact on the educational system. The work will be of interest to anthropologists, educationalists, feminists, practitioners working in the field of development, and policymakers.

Liberating Learning

EDUCATIONAL CHANGE AS A SOCIAL MOVEMENT

Dr. Santiago Rincón-Gallardo

This book is about three complementary ideas: 1) learning is a practice of freedom; 2) liberating learning in public education requires widespread cultural change in classrooms, schools, and entire education systems; and 3) social movements have been the most powerful vehicles for widespread cultural change, and in their logic of operation lie the keys to liberate learning. Drawing on existing knowledge and new research on educational change, the author offers nine principles of action to liberate learning in schools and across entire educational systems. Topics discussed include learning, pedagogy, leadership, education policy, widespread cultural change, collective action, and whole system improvement. Written for educators and leaders interested in transforming teaching and learning in classrooms and schools, as well as for public intellectuals and people interested in widespread pedagogical change, the book articulates a new way to think about and pursue educational change.
